Launch of Creating Careers at Alsop with Granada Reports

ITV Granada Reports’ Gamal Fahnbulleh has offered expert journalism and media advice to students at Alsop High School as part of its ‘Creating Careers’ initiative.

Alsop launched ‘Creating Careers’ in a bid to provide students with a wealth of information and advice about different careers. Every Wednesday a new video will be uploaded to the school’s website highlighting a local growth sector.

In the most recent video, which was recorded at the Salford Quays studio in Manchester, Gamal talked about how he first got into journalism and TV presenting. He explained that he worked at Sky News as a presenter for seven years before joining Granada Reports.

He went on to describe his style of presenting as ‘authoritative yet personable’ in order to engage viewers of the show.

Gamal also listed what skills are needed in a journalism and media role. He said: “You must write well, listen well, be empathetic and have the ability to work to tight deadlines, along with a steely determination to succeed.”

He later explained what routes students can take in order to get in the industry and touched upon his own qualifications. He completed a post graduate diploma in broadcast journalism after studying history and politics at university.

Mr Tom Muscatelli, Head of Careers writes: “This year we decided to create a Virtual Careers Fair to enable our students to gain an understanding and knowledge of a variety of job opportunities, in order for them to make informed decisions in the future.

“We were delighted that Gamal Fahnbulleh from Granada Reports was able to launch Alsop Creating Careers. During this Virtual Careers Fair, all students watch a weekly video each Wednesday, focussing on a new career path.

“We have been fortunate to have worked with local and regional volunteers, who have given up their time to create content for these videos, as well as having the opportunity to use resources produced by the Growth Platform and Careers and Enterprise Company."

Mr Gamal Fahnbulleh comments: “I was delighted to be involved with this project. I feel strongly that young people should be made aware of the huge scope of opportunities and avenues which lie ahead of them as they consider their future careers.

“Sometimes you have to see it to be it, so exposure to a range of industries and people within those is crucial to help the next generation realise their full potential”
