SupplyWell promotional film shoot

On 26th February a number of our A Level Film Studies students spent the day gaining hands-on experience of working on a film shoot, supporting visitors from Opus Media in shooting a short promotional film for teacher recruitment agency SupplyWell. As well as acting as extras in a classroom-based scene, students had the opportunity to work behind the scenes, setting up and operating camera, lighting and sound equipment and assisting in the filming of both a dramatic scene and an interview.

Paul Furlong, Creative Director of Opus Media, conducted Q&A with students throughout the day, giving them valuable advice on how to pursue a career in the creative and digital media industry, and sharing stories about his own journey. Students asked questions on a range of topics, including the different starting roles to apply for, the importance of relevant degree study vs. networking and work experience, and the value of attaining industry credits and compiling a personal showreel. A number of students were also very keen to pursue work experience during the summer term and were proactive in asking for assistance with this.

With the BBC now located at Media City in Salford, the significant increase in undergraduates studying relevant degree courses in the North West, and plans to establish a film studio in Liverpool, there has never been a more exciting or accessible time for young people in the region to pursue a career within this growth sector, and we are very grateful to Paul and Opus Media for giving up their time to inspire and educate our young aspiring filmmakers.
